From the Han Dynasty (207 BCE – 220 CE), the Ancient Silk Road brought together peoples from diverse cultures for inter-regional trade and commerce as well as the exchange of religions, customs and ideas.  Join First Saturday PDX for an exploration of the  colorful culture of the Uyghurs.

In Part 2,  Professor Tuersun, a recently retired professor of History and Ethnology from Xinjiang University,  will introduce us to Uyghur traditions, including religion, dress, language, music, dance, and cuisine.  Professor Tuersun has authored several books on the history and ethnology of the Uyghurs.

This is a bilingual program with translation provided by Professor Keith Dede of Lewis and Clark, and will run 30 minutes longer than usual to allow adequate time for questions and answers.

Professor Dede
specializes in Chinese language and linguistics, specifically the languages and culture of Qinghai Province in northwest China.  Among several publications, he has written about the influence of Tibetan and Mongolic languages on the development of local varieties of Chinese.
